Martin Schoenhals

Biography

Martin Schoenhals is a cultural anthropologist specialising in the study of China. He has written about face and shame in China and the way they allow for challenges to status superiors, as happened during the 1989 student protests. Rural issues, migration from villages to cities and the rural-urban status divide are current topics of his research. Schoenhals is Adjunct Professor, School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University and Professor, Anthropology Department, Dowling College, New York
